When a lawyer appears before the court, it is not only his client who is watching his performance. He is also being observed by other members of the legal community. His brethren will observe the lawyer’s preparation, style and effectiveness. Because of the open nature of court proceedings an attorney can quickly develop a reputation among his peers for being knowledgeable on the law, articulate in his presentation and creative in his arguments. Bottom line… lawyers who do a great job, don’t go unnoticed. In fact, their effectiveness in the courtroom often leads to new client referrals by judges, attorneys and other courtroom personnel such as bailiffs and court clerks.
Each year, Florida attorneys with first hand knowledge are asked to nominate a “Super Lawyer Rising Star.” Their candidate must be an attorney whom they personally observed in the courtroom arena. Every candidate is judged on 12 individual assessments points of peer recognition and professional achievement. In many cases, a vote can originate from an opposing counsel. In other circumstances, the nomination arises from a courtroom observer who was highly impressed by a lawyer’s zealous efforts on behalf of his client.
In addition to reviews made by members of the legal profession, an attorney-led team of researchers reviews the legal credentials of the candidates. This assures a rigorous multi-level rating process. High ethical standards, are of course, another required pre-requisite. After the vote tally is completed and the background research compiled, less than 2.5% of Florida lawyers achieve the Super Lawyer, Rising Star distinction.
